General
Hair transplantation is a surgical method aimed at restoring normal hair growth in bald areas. Surgical intervention may be required for those who cannot achieve hair restoration with medical shampoo treatments, scalp massages or alternative remedies. Hair transplantation is a surgical procedure that involves moving hair from one part of the scalp to another. Hair transplantation is performed by FUE method. Hair transplantation usually takes 5-7 hours.

What is the difference between FUE and the FUT method?

We would like to answer this question.
In order to achieve the best possible result for our patients, we at German Aesthetic explicitly specialize in hair transplantation with FUE method. We take hair from the donor area (back of the head) and then transplant it into the bald spots, receding hairline, top of the head and in the tonsure area. With the FUE method, we have the possibility to take large numbers of grafts (1.OP up to 5.000 grafts) and transplant them in the next step. In the FUE method, we gently remove the hair from the donor area with the help of a micromotor. This method is gentler for both the patient and the grafts. In the FUT method, which we do not offer in our practice, a strip of skin with an unknown number of grafts is removed from the donor area and the FEs are transplanted individually. This procedure leaves a visible scar at the back of the patient’s head.

Explanation of the FUE method

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) stands for the minimally invasive method of hair transplantation for direct anatomical extraction of follicular units (FE). Hairs grow in natural bundles, which contain one to a maximum of five hairs. These small groups together are the FE’s. The FUE technique allows an exact number and precise graft extraction and guarantees an optimal and precise treatment without graft loss. Postoperatively, no major scars remain, so no scar pain or other discomfort in the scar area is to be expected. Thus, the patient has the possibility to wear the hair long or short without scars restricting this. FUE is currently the only atraumatic harvesting technique and therefore the only minimally invasive procedure in hair transplantation.

Explanation of the FUT method

In Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT), a complete strip of skin is taken from the back of the patient’s head rather than the individual follicular units. For this reason, the number of grafts is usually limited, which means that you will not see the desired result in the end. In spite of anesthesia, patients who are treated with the FUT method have to expect a lot of pain compared to the FUE method. The resulting wound/skin gap must be sutured afterwards.

After strip method treatment, one often sees a reduction in hair density around the removal area. The concealment of the resulting scars in the removal area is usually done by wearing longer hair. This affects the patient not only in everyday life, but also in the freedom of his choice of hairstyle.

In any case, we recommend hair transplantation using the FUE method.

The advantages of the FUT technique at a glance

  • No skin incision with subsequent suture (no major scars remain)
  • Less painful postoperatively and less associated with unpleasant side effects (since no major scars remain, there is no discomfort in the scar area and no scar pain)
  • Usually fast healing
  • Little to no visible scars at the donor site (thinning areas usually disappear in a couple of months)
  • Larger transplants also possible (since we have free space available, we can perform much larger hair transplants without leaving your scalp scarred)
