General

Hair transplantation is a surgical method aimed at restoring normal hair growth in bald areas. Surgical intervention may be required for those who cannot achieve hair restoration with medical shampoo treatments, scalp massages or alternative remedies. Hair transplantation is a surgical procedure that involves moving hair from one part of the scalp to another. Hair transplantation is performed by FUE method. Hair transplantation usually takes 5-7 hours.

What do I need to consider before and after a hair transplant?

After a hair transplant, some factors must be considered to ensure the desired result. The day after the procedure, we perform a follow-up examination, where we go through all important details and explanations with you again. We would like to emphasize that we are always available for you at any time, before and after the procedure.

Before a hair transplant the following should be considered

  1. Five days before the treatment, you should refrain from alcohol and nicotine consumption, as both worsen the blood circulation.
  2. You should not take blood thinning medications before the planned hair transplant. Blood thinning medications increase bleeding and slow down the healing process.
  3. On the day of hair transplantation, eat a good breakfast in the morning and avoid caffeine (coffee, green tea, black tea, red bull, cola, etc.), as caffeine increases bleeding.
  4. On the day of hair transplantation it is best to put on a shirt, or a sweater with zipper. This has the following reason: shirt and sweater with zipper do not have to be put on over your head and therefore do not come into contact with your scalp after the surgery.
  5. A neck pillow and a spray bottle are recommended as you will need them after the hair transplant. You will need the neck pillow for sleeping and the spray bottle for daily scalp treatment during the first 10 days.

After a hair transplant the following should be observed

  1. Use a neck pillow
Use a neck pillow or a rolled up towel for sleeping. It will help you stick to the sleeping pattern and prevent contact with the inserted grafts.
  2. Sleep on your back
You should sleep only on your back during the first week after surgery. To do this, place the neck pillow in your neck and assume the sleeping position.
  3. Avoid contact with grafts
The neck pillow must also not come into contact with the grafts. Avoid stroking the head with your hand. Since the grafts take 7-10 days to grow, there is a risk of them falling out by stroking over the head.
  4. Do not scratch
Due to the beginning of the healing process, you will probably feel an itch on your scalp. It is important that you do not scratch. If it becomes quite uncomfortable, you can very gently dab the scalp with your fingertips.
  5. Food
You should drink plenty of fluids and avoid salty and spicy foods, to avoid sweating and flushing out the freshly transplanted grafts. You may take 1g of paracetamol every 4-6 hours. After the hair transplantation you should abstain from alcohol and cigarettes for four weeks.
  6. Physical exertion and other activities
During the first seven postoperative days, you should avoid all physical exertion. This applies to mental stress and sexual activities, among others. In addition, you should refrain from sports during the first months after the hair transplantation, because if sweating or soiling of the hair occurs, an infection may develop. Avoid visiting swimming pools, saunas or hamams for the first three weeks and solarium for the first six months, as they impair wound healing and are a risk of infection. Salt water is not helpful to wound healing.
  7. Care products and headgear
For the first 10 days after surgery, you should avoid all care products. Do not use hair gel or hair spray. For the first two weeks after hair transplantation, refrain from using a hair dryer. In the first 10 days you should not wear any head covering, neither headscarves nor caps, this is because the scalp is still very sensitive and the grafts are not yet attached  and the crusts are not completely removed.
  8. No wet razor
You should not use a wet razor or electric hair clippers in the grafted area for three months. Cut the hair only with scissors. In the removal area, you may use hair clippers after four weeks. It is advisable not to cut the transplanted hair too often during the growth phase and to let it grow naturally. The remaining hair can becut by yourself, or at the hairdresser.
